Pick a volunteer at random, fairly and with a bit of fun

Pick someone at random from everyone in your Zoom, Meet or Teams call, from people who opt in by chat keyword, or from phones in the room.

Pick a volunteer is Claryoo's random participant picker for Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and in-person sessions. You choose who's in the draw: everyone in the session, a list of names, people who opt in, or the people who answered a poll or got a quiz right. Pull the lever, slot-machine reels spin, and they land on a name.

How it works

  1. Open Pick a volunteer from your Claryoo dashboard during the session, or add it to your run of show ahead of time.
  2. Choose who's in the draw:
    • Everyone in the session. Leave the list empty and Claryoo draws from everyone there.
    • Names you add. Type names or paste a list.
    • People who opt in. Set a keyword like JOIN. On a call, people type it in the meeting chat; in a room, they tap "Count me in" on their phone.
    • From a poll or a quiz. After a live poll, draw from the people who voted. After a quiz, draw from the people who got it right.
  3. Go live. For an opt-in pick, Claryoo shows the keyword in a banner you can share on screen, and you watch the count of who has joined go up.
  4. Pull the lever. The reels spin and stop on a name.
  5. Pick again if you need more than one person.

What people in the session see and do

On a call, people only need to do something if you've asked them to opt in: they type the keyword in the meeting chat, the same chat they already use. Share your screen if you'd like everyone to watch the reels spin.

In a room, people who've joined by QR see the pick on their phones, with the same reels and the names in the draw. For an opt-in pick, they tap "Count me in" and see "You're in" straight away. When the reels stop, the person chosen sees "You were picked!" and everyone else sees who it was. If you've put the room screen on the projector, the whole room watches it there too. More on in-person sessions.

What you see as the host

  • The names in the draw, which you can edit before you pull.
  • How many have opted in, live, when you use a keyword.
  • Everyone picked so far, if you draw more than once.
  • The rest of the room, alongside. Who's with you and who's gone quiet, and questions waiting on one board, longest wait first.

A pick from the quiz winners is a good way to ask someone to explain their answer. A pick from the poll voters keeps the conversation with the people who were already taking part.

Good for

  • Facilitators: choosing who reports back from a breakout, without the same three people volunteering every time.
  • Trainers: asking someone who got the quiz right to walk the group through it.
  • Nonprofits and community programs: sharing out a turn to speak on member calls, or a light moment at a community event.
  • Speakers: bringing an audience member into a keynote or book launch, fairly and in full view.

FAQ

Do participants need to install anything?

No. On a call, everyone in the session can be in the draw without doing anything, or they opt in by typing a keyword in the meeting chat. In a room, they use the phone page they opened by scanning a QR code.

Can people choose not to be picked?

Yes, if you use a keyword. Only the people who type it in the chat, or tap "Count me in" on their phone, are in the draw.

Can I draw only from people who took part?

Yes. Draw from the people who voted in a poll, or from those who got a quiz right.

Can I pick more than one person?

Yes. Pull again for another name, and you'll see everyone picked so far.
