An audience response system that works in the meeting chat and on phones
What an audience response system is, the three kinds and how to pick one. Claryoo runs polls and quizzes in the Zoom, Meet or Teams chat, or on phones.
An audience response system lets everyone in a session answer a question at the same time, and shows the host the results straight away. Polls, quizzes, votes and anonymous questions all count. It turns a talk into a conversation, and it tells you what the room thinks instead of what the loudest three people think.
Claryoo is an audience response system for live sessions. Online, people answer by typing in the Zoom, Google Meet or Microsoft Teams chat. In a room, they answer on their phones by QR code. Nobody needs a clicker, an app or an account.
The three kinds of audience response system
| Clickers | App or web link | In the meeting chat | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How people answer | A handheld keypad | A website or app on their phone, joined with a code | Typing in the Zoom, Meet or Teams chat |
| What you need | Hardware for every seat, plus a receiver | A second screen for everyone | Nothing extra |
| Works online | No | Yes, but people leave the call to answer | Yes |
| Works in a room | Yes | Yes | Phones by QR code (Claryoo) |
| Setup for the audience | Hand out and collect devices | Open a link, type a code | None |
Clickers were the first audience response systems, and you still see them in lecture halls. They are reliable, but they cost money per seat and don't work on a video call. Web and app tools such as Mentimeter, Slido and Poll Everywhere replaced them for most sessions. They work well, but every person has to open a second screen and type a code, and some never do. Chat-based tools like Claryoo skip that step online, because people answer where they already are.
How Claryoo works as an audience response system
- Bring Claryoo into your session. Paste a Zoom, Meet or Teams link into your dashboard, add the Zoom app, or connect your calendar. For a room, open the session and show the QR code.
- Prepare your questions, or let Claryoo draft them. Describe the session and Claryoo suggests polls and quizzes in order.
- Launch a question when you're ready. Share your screen so everyone sees it.
- People answer. Online they type a letter like "B" in the chat. In a room they tap their answer on their phone.
- Talk about the results. You see answers arrive live, then decide where to go next.
Besides live polls, you can run quizzes with a right answer, collect questions from the chat, and pick a volunteer at random. While it runs, Claryoo also shows you who's with you and who has gone quiet.
What to look for in an audience response system
- How people join. Every extra step loses part of the room. The fewer links and codes, the more answers you get.
- Online and in person. If you run both, use one tool for both, so your questions and results stay in one place.
- Anonymous answers. People answer honestly when nobody can see their name. Make sure you can switch it on per question.
- Quizzes as well as polls. A poll asks for opinions; a quiz checks what people learned. Trainers need both.
- Results you can use afterwards. Results should stay with the session, so you can follow up on what the room told you.
Good for
- Trainers: knowledge checks after each module, so you know who is keeping up before you move on.
- Facilitators: quick votes that bring in the whole group, not just the confident voices.
- Nonprofits: board and member meetings where people can answer without unmuting.
- Speakers: an opening question that gets a keynote or webinar talking back from the first minute.

FAQ
What is an audience response system?
A tool that lets everyone in a session answer a question at the same time, with results shown live. It's also called a student response system, classroom response system or personal response system, and the handheld versions are often just called clickers.
Do I still need clickers?
No. People can answer on the phone they already carry, or in the meeting chat on a video call. Clickers mainly make sense where phones aren't allowed.
Does an audience response system work on Zoom?
Yes. With Claryoo, people answer polls and quizzes by typing in the Zoom chat, with no link to open. It works the same on Google Meet and Microsoft Teams.
Can answers be anonymous?
Yes. Turn on anonymous for any poll and nobody, including you, sees who chose what.
Is there a free audience response system?
Yes. Claryoo has a free plan, with no card needed to start.
